Cargill acquires Format International

Format International, the UK independent specialist in feed industry software, has been acquired by US multinational Cargill. The global agribusiness says the deal strengthens its whole chain presence in the animal nutrition and feed industries.

Format International was formed in 1980 to harness the rapid developments in IT technology at the time with linear programming and other techniques to obtain least cost formulations for recipes and mixtures in feed manufacturing. It now provides design, authoring and marketing services in recipe optimisation, ingredient allocation and feed and food formulation for the livestock, aquaculture, pet food, human food, premix and other industries.

The Woking-based company has over 5,000 licensed users in over 93 countries across the world, from small local companies and consultancies to multinational corporations.

Cargill will integrate Format International into its Feed Management Systems (FMS) software company, which operates as a separate part of the Cargill Animal Nutrition division. FMS, with over 12,000 users, provides software for feed industry formulations and operations. The company says the combination “creates a unique opportunity for Cargill to create world-class formulation solutions and provide customers with an even more comprehensive range of products and services”.

“This acquisition combines Format International’s software capabilities and state-of-the-art platform with Cargill’s expertise in animal nutrition and nutrient analysis,” states Bruce Feist, managing director of Cargill Feed Management Systems. “Together, we will be able to offer our customers a complete and fully integrated nutrition solution that will deliver the right information to the right person – anytime, anywhere.”

Format International managing director Merryl Webster adds: “Cargill’s commitment to providing customers with end-to-end solutions will give Format’s customers additional choices of tools and systems which will help to more effectively grow their businesses long-term and ensure that we continue to deliver high quality products and services to them.

“What impresses me about Cargill is its high ethical standards, sustainable business practices and values-based culture focused on customers, employees and communities.“
