AgriTrade News is sad to report the death of Dr Pearse Lyons, founder and president of Alltech, due to complications following heart surgery. He was 73.
Born in Ireland, Dr Lyons moved to the US in the late 1970s to use his expertise in fermentation technology to develop and market a range of yeast-based products to improve the efficiency of feed utilisation by livestock.
From a base in Lexington, Kentucky, he built a multibillion-dollar international business encompassing yeast and enzyme technology, algae and nutrigenomics applications to improve animal, crop and human health and performance. Family-owned Alltech now employs more than 5,000 people around the world.
“Dr Lyons was first and foremost an entrepreneur and tireless innovator, with a keen scientific mind,” says a company statement. “His scientific expertise, combined with an acute business sense, helped revolutionize the animal feed industry through the introduction of natural ingredients to animal feed. From farm to field, from market to family dinner table, our world is immeasurably better because he was a man who never saw problems, only a challenge that had not yet been solved.”
Dr Lyons was also active in brewing, with Breweries in Kentucky and Cumbria, and last year opened the Pearse Lyons Distillery, a whiskey distillery based in an 800 year old church in Dublin.
There is an online book of condolences at alltech.com/pearselyons for memories and tributes.
